Design 3D characters for Photoshop down to the last detail by putting together the desired body parts, customizing physical traits and choosing clothes

Mixamo

Fuse Basic Preview is free to download for anyone with a free Mixamo account and comes with 16 body parts, 14 clothing items, and 10 smart substances. The major difference in features between Fuse Basic Preview and the full version of Fuse Preview, is that it does not come with the asset import feature.

The human body and facial expressions, in particular, pose a significant challenge to graphic designers. Creating a realistic human character for a game or an animation requires not only design experience but also a reliable software solution to work with. Aiming to provide a middle-ranged alternative between complex designing apps and simple animation tools, Adobe Fuse comes with a collection of predefined human body parts, clothes, and other items you can combine to obtain lifelike characters.

Create a character by customizing the available presets

There are four steps you have to take in order to build your model, namely assembling body parts, customizing the design, adding clothing, and changing textures.

You start by choosing a female or a male head, and as you make your selection, Adobe Fuse automatically proceeds to the torso, the legs, and the arms. Once you have your basic model, you can start customizing the size and shape of different areas of the body yourself or randomize all the available parameters. As such, you can obtain characters that look different, even if the application only comes with a limited number of faces and other body parts.

Dress up your model and enrich the default library with custom items

Once the body is ready, you can proceed to clothes. Adobe Fuse delivers a variate collection of tops, pants, shoes, hats, eyewear, gloves, and masks, so you have enough to go through and choose from. The library also includes several hair styles, both for women and men. All the clothing pieces are immediately visible in the preview area with the default color and texture. To modify any item, you must proceed to the next step, in the 'Texture' tab.

Adobe Fuse enables you to save any item in the model as a preset and use it later, be it a body type or a clothing object. Nevertheless, it does not allow you to create custom items unless you download and install the Content Creator Package (check the File menu), which lets you enrich the default library of Fuse with your own designs of a body, clothing pieces, and hair styles. Alternatively, you can import clothing, items, and characters.

Intuitive 3D modeling of characters, with options to export the result or build animations

Creating a character with Adobe Fuse is easy, and the results are rather impressive. Fuse can export either the textures in different configurations, or save the model as an OBJ file, which can be imported to other designing applications, for further editing.

Normally, thinking about movement and animation is the next step once your character is ready. Adobe Fuse has got that covered, as it can upload your character to the Mixamo (part of the Adobe family) online auto-rigger. This online animator renders the model, builds a skeleton and generates a preview of the movements, enabling you to apply control rig scripts and animate your character. Furthermore, it can generate animation-ready shapes that you can use with any other 3D animation app or game engine.

Adobe is powering the next generation of 3D and AR creatives with innovative new tools like Adobe Dimension, Adobe Aero, the Substance suite of products, as well as other 3D services. Focusing on these initiatives requires the full commitment of resources. And as a result, we've stopped the future development of Adobe Fuse (Beta), a 3D character creation software.

Fuse has been removed from Creative Cloud and is no longer available for download. We have tried to keep Fuse available as long as possible, but, unfortunately, it does not work with the newest Mac OS, Catalina (10.15), due to incompatible technology components.

3D characters remain an important aspect of many projects, and we plan to still have robust character workflows in the future. In conjunction, last year we refreshed Mixamo.com, our 3D character rigging, and animation web service. You'll be able to find dozens of new ready-to-use 3D characters and a refreshed UI.

Adobe remains committed to 3D & AR initiatives, and we're excited to continue this journey into the new generation of design.
